Nathula Pass

Nathula Pass that connects India with Tibet used to be an important trade route between two countries before 1962. This historical corridor was closed after the Indi-China war and now is a major attraction for Indian tourists. Located around 56 km from Gangtok at an altitude of 14450 ft, the road to Nathula goes beyond Tsomgo lake for another 18 kilometres to the end on the international border. It is one of the highest motorable roads in the world and is a sensitive eco-zone with army control. From this point, you can even see the road winding down the Chumbi valley on a clear day. Only Indian Tourists with a special permit are allowed to go close to the international border from where you can see Chinese soldiers on the other side of the barbed wire.
