Rumtek Monastery
Rumtek Monastery, the seat of His Holiness, The Gyalwa Karmapa of the Kargyu sect of Tibetan Buddhism, is situated around 23 km from Gangtok, on the other side of the hill. With a nice, rural setting, Rumtek is a quiet getaway and an ideal half-day excursion from the town. The drive to Rumtek from Gangtok snakes through typical Sikkimese villages and paddy fields, and is a joy to watch, particularly during the June – October period. Rumtek, the largest Monastery in Sikkim, is the main attraction here. It is almost a replica of the original monastery in Tsurpu in Tibet. The monastery houses rare Buddhist religious art objects and is also a world-renowned centre for Buddhist’s teachings of the Karygu sect.
